Hello!

 

Ms Laura Simms would be teaching a 4-session class on "Performance Storytelling", as part of Chennai Storytelling Festival 2020 (the 8th edition of this Festival). 

 

Note: The 4 sessions of Laura Simms' Storytelling Class in CSF 2020 are filled.  However, your name could be placed on a "WAITING LIST" to join these sessions.  If interested, please call Dr Eric Miller at 98403 94282. Thank you!

 

The 4 sessions of this class are:

1) Session 1 -- Mon 10th Feb, 10am-1pm.

2) Session 2 -- Tues 11th Feb, 2pm-4:30pm.

3) Session 3 -- Wed 12th Feb, 5pm-7:30pm.

4) Session 4 -- Thurs 13th Feb, 10am-12:30pm.

These 4 sessions would occur at the Slate space (on the campus of Lady Andal School), Harrington Road, Chetpet.

This would be Laura Simms' first visit to Chennai.

 

Laura introduced me to storytelling, starting approx 40 years ago (in the late-1970s) in our hometown of NYC -- and I have been studying wth her ever since.

Laura Simms would also be giving 2 Storytelling performances in CSF 2020 --

 

1) Sun 9th Feb, at 11am (for children --

older people also welcome!).

2) Thurs 13th Feb, at 6pm (for adults).

In addition, the Festival would feature 3 Team-Workshops at Colleges, a Seminar, and Performances by 35 (Indian) Storytellers.

 

Festival participants who attend at least one session of Laura's class are invited to help plan and conduct these Workshops, and to participate in the Seminar (as presenters and/or as audience members).

The 3 Team-Workshops would be:

 

Team-Workshop #1 --

Tuesday 11th Feb, 9:30am-12noon

"Storytelling and Tourism"

Venue: History and Tourism Dept, Stella Maris College (Alwarpet).

 

Team-Workshop #2 --

Wednesday 12th Feb, 10am-12noon.

"Storytelling for Teaching-and-learning the English Language."

Venue: NKT College of Education (Triplicane).

 

Team-Workshop #3 --

Wednesday 12th Feb, 1:30pm-3:30pm

"Storytelling Therapy."

Note: Storytelling Therapy methods could be used for Counselling, Facilitating Healing and Personality Development, Life Coaching, Mentoring, Giving Training in Soft Skills, Life Skills, and Communication Skills, etc.

Venue: Social Work Dept, Stella Maris College (Alwarpet).

The Seminar would be:

 

Thursday 13th Feb, 2pm-4pm.

"Storytelling for Teaching-and-learning Academic Subjects".

Venue: The Wandering Artist, RA Puram.

Also:  On the final 3 days of the 10-day Festival -- on Fri 14th, Sat 15th, and Sun 16th Feb -- there would be 5 group programs, each one featuring 7 Storytellers. 

 

Thus, in these 5 programs there would be a total of 35 Storytellers (telling for people of all ages).

Some background --

 

It was when I was studying with and doing office work for Laura in the mid-1980s that it occurred to me that there should be a World Storytelling Institute.

 

In 2007, after settling in Chennai, I took the lead in founding the World Storytelling Institute (as an NGO, registered in Chennai).

 

Laura is not directly involved with the WSI, but from my side she certainly provided the inspiration for it.
