Deeptha Vivekanand (Bangalore).  Fri 6 Feb.  10am-Noon.  Workshop on "Using Storytelling to Teach Academic Subjects".

 

Stories can be used to heighten interest even in subjects that may at first seem "dry".  Personifying abstract elements can make principles and processes of subjects like Math, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Geography adventurous and fascinating.

 

Regarding Social Studies / the Social Sciences (History, Anthropology, Sociology, etc): Workshop Participants would be taught ways of creating stories featuring characters who experience what people in given cultures and time periods were/are experiencing.  Ways of embodying in stories the Ideas, Questions, and Conflicts in particular societies would be demonstrated.

 

Story-creation techniques, and sample lesson plans, would be presented.

 

Workshop Participants could raise topics they might be interested in teaching about, and in small groups they could develop stories in relation to these topics.

 

Venue: World Storytelling Institute -- Kilpauk Garden space.  Near New Avadi Road.

Fri 13 Feb.  9:30am-11am.  Workshop on "Multi-sensory Storytelling".

 

This workshop involves creating stories around objects from daily life; using props, puppets, pictures, and objects in storytelling; and creating an enhanced sensorial experience for children.

 

The Workshop would explore:

Storifying Objects.

Using Props for Visualizing Stories.

Incorporating Multi-Sensory Elements into Storytelling.

Using Multiple Intelligences as Tools for Creating Story Experiences for Children.

 

Four Key Areas covered in the Workshop would be, 

 

A) Introduction to the "Multiple Intelligences" Approach, and Ways It Could be Applied to Storytelling.

The Multiple Intelligences approach is an effective tool for creating storytelling and story-listening experiences for both children with Special Needs, and also children in general.

 

B) Exploring the Nature of Objects.

Increasing awareness of the multiple dimensions of objects.

 

C) Using Props and Objects in Storytelling.

Gathering and using story-specific props and objects to enhance storytelling and story-listening experiences.  Composing meaningful age- and need- appropriate stories around objects.  A method known as "Mindful Mapping" would be used in these processes.

 

D) Incorporating Additional Multi-Sensory Elements into Storytelling.

Including through the creation and use of "Story Tubs" and other sensory materials.

 

For parents and teachers of children, and anyone else who might be interested.   Admission fee: Rs 300.

Workshop participants would learn ways to facilitate children listening to stories to engage in audience-participation -- that is, to use their bodies and voices to act-out characters. Such audience-participation can help the children to internalise and learn from stories.
