the UNRWA in Gaza, and is also a volunteering

storyteller for the Hands Up Project, conducting

weekly live sessions with learners of English.

Telling stories has been a life long passion for

Hend and so she has worked hard for several

years to make her wish of being a storyteller

come true, taking every opportunity to practice

and research new methods and engage with

other performers and audiences.

In 2017, she won second place in the Arabic

storytelling competition, conducted at the Arab

World level by Sharek Centre, a London-based

holistic language instruction centre for Arabic

learning. In April 2020, she took part in the

Sharing Timely Tales event hosted by the IATEFL

Global-Get Together.

In October 2020, Hend took a storytelling

course, The CrEST; Creative and Engaging

Storytelling for Teachers, led by David Heathfield.

In January 2021, she participated in a follow-up

course with the same instructor.

In 2018, Hend took a drama course with Nick

Bilbrough, the founder of the Hands Up Project.

She is also taking a remote theatre course with

Often the right time and circumstance

Jon Sundell (in North Carolina, USA),

who has been singing and telling stories

“Mother, the Queen of My Heart,” by

early country music singer Jimmy

Rodgers, with a Mexican folktale

about a rich man’s son who gets a

second chance.  Both pieces relate

how an unexpected event provokes

a wayward son to suddenly heed

the advice of a long-dead parent.

Rebecca is Belgian-British, currently based in the

South of Spain. She tells stories in English, Spanish

and French wherever the wind takes her; Spain,

India, Little Tibet, the Middle East, Belgium and

online to name but a few places. Her passion is

to look into people’s eyes, and travel with them

through stories, whether in a prison, a yoga school,

a Tibetan monastery in the Himalaya, a theatre,

or a library. Rebecca has also participated in

international festivals such as the National Storytelling

Network festivals (USA), Munt de Mots festival

(Barcelona) and Maratón de Cuentos de Guadalajara

(Madrid). In Spain, she trains primary, secondary

and language teachers in storytelling techniques for

the Department of Education of Catalonia, and give

introductory courses in storytelling skills for teenagers

and adults in person and online.

Rebecca has a BA in French and Indonesian

literature, and an MA in Anthropology. Even though

these two subjects may seem disconnected,

storytelling brings them together: storytelling is the

literature of the people! She is currently studying in

an MA programme in Applied English, taking narratology,

linguistics, and fairy tale studies amongst other subjects.

She studied ‘El Arte de Contar Cuentos’ with Numancia

Rojas in Barcelona for three years, and has done

shorter workshops with different teachers from

different backgrounds, including Jan Blake (UK) and

Martha Escudero (Mexico). She loves learning from

other professional storytellers and continue to do so

when she has the opportunity. She has played music

since she was a child and like to use sounds (flute,

kalimba, voice and drum) to give a depth to the stories

she tells.  Storytelling is a form of communication that

goes way beyond words; it is a heart to heart interaction,

and that is why she loves it!

"Lindelwe's Song" is an original story --

a modern-day fairytale that celebrates the

power of song. This is one of my own stories.

It was inspired by my friendships with several

Xhosa women in Cape Town, South Africa,

who told me that without their singing they could

never have made it through the "thorns of apartheid".

"Lindelwe's Song" is published in my latest book,

Stories to Light the Night: A Grief and Loss Collection

for Children, Families and Communities (Hawthorn

Press, 2021) in the Section entitled "Loss of Place".
